How to host a website without getting ripped off

Posted by | Digital Business Advice | No Comments
Website hosting isn’t the most interesting topic of discussion for most people and we agree, it can be quite nerdy. However, it is a pretty important thing to understand  if you have a website that you’d like the world to know about. So, read on to learn how to host a website without getting ripped off.

What the heck is hosting anyway?

First, let us share some insight on what hosting actually is and how it works.

Your website is “hosted” (essentially meaning it lives) on a server.
If you want your website to run really well, you need awesome servers to host it on.
Awesome servers are not cheap to run and therefore, hosting companies charge to host your website.

That’s the quick and dirty explanation. We could go on and on about all the ins and outs of hosting in detail, but like I said before – nerd talk is boring for most people. Keep reading so you know how to host a website without getting ripped off.

So, what makes a good hosting company or service?

Most of the popular companies try to sell you a bunch of up-sells that you generally don’t need, like ‘5 year registration protection’ or a ‘bundle of domain names’.  THESE ARE UP-SELLS, and you most likely don’t need them, or are paying too much. Don’t let these companies rip you off. Take a second to either do some research or ask someone in the industry to help you discover what you really need – Like us!

How much should hosting a website cost you?

For the large majority of websites, simple plans are sufficient. If your using a CMS like WordPress, we suggest that you host on web servers that are optimised for that type of website. These days having a fast loading website is not only good for your customers, but also good for your Google search ranking. Many popular web hosts have comparable hosting and WordPress optimised hosting plans… to a degree. Just be sure to not buy all the extras that they try to add on once the sales process starts. If they are trying to scare you into buying every up-sell, is this really a company you want to work with?

That’s why we offer an audit service to let you know what you’re really paying for. We’ve done it for numerous clients and we’re happy to move you over to our hosting account at no additional cost to the yearly fee. More often than not, you will have and upgraded server option for cheaper than your existing plan.

Help! I’m Sick of the 9-5 Work Week

Posted by | Digital Business Advice | No Comments

Has the work week got you down in the dumps? Are you overwhelmed and underpaid? Do you wish you had more time and energy to put into something you’re passionate about?

Surprise! You’re not alone! We often get emails from people stating that they’re sick of the 9-5 and want to take the leap out of the conventional work week. We feel for these people, because we’ve been there. But, we took the leap and now reap the benefits of doing so now. We have more time, energy and we get to work on projects we enjoy (well mostly). Sure, it hasn’t always been easy, but if you want it bad enough, IT IS POSSIBLE!

What can you do if you are sick of the 9-5 work week?

We live in an age where technology moves at a pace more rapid than ever before and almost everyone, including most elderly people, use digital services. The options to make money from the digital world are the best they have ever been and are predicted to keep escalating. Tools like mobile and desktop apps, ecommerce platforms and the world wide web itself provide almost anyone with the opportunity to take a leap away from the conventional lifestyle. All you need to do is look.

Searching for work options on the internet can be frustrating. This is where a lot of people get overwhelmed and caught up in the junk of the internet and fall into some risky territory, where they are often taken advantage of by marketing creeps promising them millions overnight. Yes, there are numerous great things out there for you to use and make money from, but there are also great risks in the faceless ether of the digital universe. Don’t worry though, we have been there, and we are here to help.

Where to look and how to come up with an idea?

King Tide Media have been operating for over 10 years working in the digital marketing, graphic design and web development. Over this time we have learned some tricks and secrets that we want to share so you don’t get lost out there in the unknown.

Here are some questions to start asking yourself:

  1. What skills (digital or otherwise) do you have now? Jot these skills down and start researching and brainstorming how you could use them to break into a digital space. Include everything: Are you good at math? Do you write well? Do you have experience using computer software and programs? Can you knit? Seriously, put it all down on paper, so you can see them all.
  2. What topics do people you already know ask your advice on? Do you have good fashion sense? Are you good at finding great restaurants or special deals?  Are you a great writer or researcher?
  3. How much time do you have? Are you unemployed? Do you have full time job? How much time can you spare each week for your new venture?
  4. Do you have money set aside for a new project? Once you find your idea, do you have funds to get it off the ground? Do you need to start saving now? Perhaps you can work out a monthly budget that you are happy with.
  5. Do you know where to find help and do you have support?  You will never have all the answers, so make sure you know where to find them when you need to.

What to Do Once You Have An Idea

So, you’ve done your brainstorming and you have come up with the best idea ever thought of. Before you go telling everyone and sinking all your time and money into it, take a beat to do your homework. Ask yourself: who is my competition? Yes, there is almost always someone that is doing what you thought of, so deal with it and figure out how you can do it better or different. Write down a list of your competitors and spend some serious time looking at what they are doing well and what you think they could improve on.

Once you’re researched your competition it will become more clear how you can start planning your next move. There is a lot that goes into getting a digital business off the ground and if you are still a little lost, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Posted by | Digital Business Advice | No Comments

Social Media is one of the most beneficial tools a business owner can use. With billions of people using social media, it is so powerful, it’s actually a bit crazy. There are a bunch of awesome tactics you as a business owner can use if you have social media accounts. We’ve outlined our top recommendations below.

Contests – Contests expose your business to millions of users that are willing to give you something, or are willing to do something for your business, with the incentive of getting something for free. Contests are great for almost any business and if you aren’t able to provide a freebie yourself, you can team up with other like-minded businesses to run a contest together.

Link sharing to gated content – This basically means you’ll offer something to people for free if they join your email list or community. For example: a fitness trainer could offer a guide on how to lose 5 pounds in 30 days, but they only give you their guide after you give them your email address.

If you don’t know how to create ads or campaigns, hire someone with the expertise and watch your profits rise. Like anything in business, it may take a little time to get your audience and ads on point, so be patient and appreciate the process.

Facebook Ads Examples

Videos – Video is a powerful tool to promote anything online. Internet users are 60% more likely to trust your company if you use videos in your marketing strategy and it is easy to understand why when YouTube receives the highest number (over a billion people per day) of unique viewers than any other online platform. If you don’t know how to make videos – find someone who does, or simply use your mobile to film and edit content relevant to your business. You can also use other interactive options like google hangouts, webinars or live streaming to your advantage.

Social Media Management Platforms – If you aren’t into social media or you don’t really want to spend hours posting on each platform separately, you’re in luck – there are very useful tools available to save you time; Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social and Crowdfire.

Social Media Groups – Social media groups allow you to connect with cold leads with ease. Most groups have lengthy rules about solicitation, but some will allow you to post about your business or services at least a few times per day and you can get around the rules by commenting about your services in other members posts. This is a method that we use often implement and it has proven to be quite worthwhile.

If your not sure which platforms are most appropriate for your business, at minimum we suggest using: Facebook (1.8 billion +users), Twitter (300 million+ users), Instagram (600 million users) and if you have videos – Youtube (1 billion+ users).
